Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and capture Li from geothermal hot water as a slightly soluble composite Li-Al salt by adding a soluble Al salt to the hot water and adjusting the water to a specified pH.
CONSTITUTION: By adding a soluble Al salt such as AlCl3.6H2O to geothermal hot water contg. dissolved Li, the Li is combined with AlO2 - to form a composite Li-Al salt. The reaction condition includes 10W13pH. When the hot water contains dissolved alkaline earth metals together with Li, the metals react with the Al salt and form a slightly soluble Ca-Al salt, etc., so tha added Al salt does not effectively act on the Li to reduce the Li capturing rate. Accordingly, in this case a chemical agent for converting only Ca, Mg, etc. into insoluble salts is first added to the hot water to removed the metals or reduce the content of them. The soluble Al salt is then added, the hot water is adjusted to 10W 13pH, and the resulting slightly soluble Li-Al salt is separated and captured.
