Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the interlayer adhesiveness of each applied paint film, by forming the film of alkyl silicate-type zinc dust composition to a substrate, treating the composition-applied surface with water or an acidic water solution, and then coating the surface with topcoat paint.
CONSTITUTION: Zinc dust paint, prepared by dispersing zinc dust in a solution comprising an alkyl silicate which can be converted into silanol by hydrolysis and an organic solvent which can dissolve the alkyl silicate, is applied to a substrate such as a steel sheet. Water or an acidic water solution of pH 4W7 is sprayed to the paint-applied surface by airless spray, air spray or the like, and then the surface is held as such one hour. Thereafter, topcoat paint, e.g. chlorinated-rubber paint, vinyl chloride paint, urethane paint or tar urethane paint, is applied to the treated surface. Consequently, the water or the acidic water solution changes the surface condition of the applied zinc dust paint film so as to enhance its adhesiveness. Moreover, the adhesiveness to the topcoat paint is also improved.
