Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve resolution in measuring the shape by detecting the ultrasonic wave echoes reflected from the steel plate by an ultrasonic wave tranceiver through liquid columns. CONSTITUTION:Continuous water clumns 11-13 are formed between the steel plate 1 which is sent from working rolls 2 and 3 in the direction of an arrow and sensors 7-9. The ultrasonic waves from the sensors 7-9 are transmitted to the steel plate 1 through the water columns 11-13. The reflected echoes from the surface are detected by the sensors 7-9, and introduced to distance meters 17, 20, and 21. Based on the time interval from the transmission to the reception of the ultrasonic waves, the distance, i.e. the change in the shape of the steel plate 1, is detected. Since the measurement is performed for long measuring distance in the small measuring range in the small liquid column, the resolution in the measurement of the shape is improved.
