Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the quantity of smoke made by an engine provided with a main and an auxiliary injection passages which connect a swirl chamber and a main chamber to each other, by providing a main and an auxiliary recesses on the top of the piston. CONSTITUTION:The top 10A of a piston is provided with a main recess 11 extending inwards from a part which is opposed to a main injection passage 4. The top 10A of the piston is also provided with an auxiliary recess 12 extending in a different direction from a part which is opposed to an auxiliary injection passage 5. As a result, fuel supplied through the auxiliary injection passage 5 collides against the divided part 12B of the auxiliary recess 12 so that some of the fuel diffuses and the other liquid portion of the fuel is gradually evaporated while flowing in two directions along the bottom 12A of the recess before the fuel is burned. According to this constitution, the fuel supplied through the auxiliary injection passage 5 is burned in a zone different from that of combustion of gas injected through the main passage 4.
