Abstract
PURPOSE: To cause combustion of mixture stepwise and to thereby minimize generation of Nox in a diesel engine, by forming at the top of piston a cavity consisting of a plurality of recesses whose inner diameter is reduced gradually.
CONSTITUTION: A cavity 2 is formed at the top of piston 1. This cavity 2 has three recesses 21W23, inner diameters of which are reduced toward the bottom of cavity 2, and a central projection 5 is formed on the bottom surface of recess 23. On the other hand, fuel injection nozzle 3 is fixed such that fuel ejected therefrom is directed toward shoulder portion 4 of recess 23. With such an arrangement, fuel is ejected downwardly into the cavity 2 in a swirling flow, and flame produced thereafter is propagated stepwise from downward to upward.
