Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a highly corrosion-resistant and strong alloy pipe for oil wells by regulating the thickness of a layer which is softened by heating and is applied on the surfaces of the pipe to a specific relation with respect to the wall thickness of the pipe.
CONSTITUTION: One or both of the inside and outside surfaces of a pipe which is subjected to cold working or further an aging treatment are formed with a layer which is softened by heating. The distance t1 (thickness of the softened layer) from the treated surface S up to the position A having the average value HA of the hardness HS in the treated surface part and the hardness HC in the central part of the wall thickness is so regulated as to be ≤20% the wall thickness (t) of the pipe and in case both the inside and outside surface of the pipe have the softened layer, as to be ≤40% the total thereof. Thereby, the necessary strength as an oil well pipe is assured by the softened layers other than the surface layer of the pipe wall and advantage is taken of the high corrosion-resistance intrinsic to said alloy with the softened layer of the surface.
