Abstract

PURPOSE: To satisfy limited cooling rates in terms of metallic structure and to keep the rate of deformation of a stainless steel matrial after a heat treatment which is conveyed in a longitudinal direction by specifying the cooling rate of said material in a prescribed temp. range of its surface in cooling said material.
CONSTITUTION: A stainless steel material 3 which moves continuously in a longitudinal direction is cooled by the cooling water 4 sprayed uniformly thereto form the top and bottom surfaces thereof. In this state, the cooling rate in a temp. range from 950°C down to 100°C on the surfaces of the material 3 is kept at ≥200°C/sec and the material is cooled abruptly and uniformly in order to suppress the rate of deformation of the material 3 at the value generally permitted for passing the same through levelers (30mm/5m length) or below. In this case, with the steel materials thicker than oridinary about 2W15mm, at least the quick cooling by jetting of water is required. The water is injected at ≥1m/sec initial velocity of flow. As a result, it is possible to break the vapor films formed on the surfaces of the steel material, to increase the rate of cooling further and to reduce deformation. Here, 1 in the figure denotes a heating furnace, 2 a cooling zone and 61, 62, 71, 72 denote cooling water pipes respectively.
