Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the life of a graphite material considerably and to make graphite of low grades usable sufficiently by using a casting material wherein the surfaces of a graphite material are impregnated with powder of boron nitride. CONSTITUTION:In the case of a purification method by continuous casting, a heat insulating material 2 is provided on the outside circumference of a mold 1 impregnated with boron nitride, and heaters 3 are buried therein, whereby the temp. of molten metal 4 is kept at adequate temp. A metallic ingot 5 to be purified is cooled by the cooling medium such as air blown out through cooling pipes 6 at the lower part of the mold 1. By this cooling, the molten metal part in the mold 1 is solidified and a solidification interface 7 is formed, thus the purified metal solidifies and crystallizes successively on the interface. The life of the material is extended considerably by using a material prepd. by contg. boron nitride in graphite for the mold 1, and since the hole parts of graphite are impregnated with boron nitride, the lubricity is improved. Thus, casting is accomplished as well without any trouble at all in using low-grade graphite.
