Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of turbulent flow at the time of switch- over between a main passage and a by-pass for a water pump provided with a thermostat at the cooling water suction side to change the main passage and the by-pass for each other to conduct cooling water, by making the direction of water flow in the main passage indentical with that in the by-pass. CONSTITUTION:A pump body 32 is provided with an inlet port 30 for a main cooling water passage and another inlet port 31 for an engine by-pass. A casing 34, in which a thermostat 33 is provided, is secured on the body 32. In the thermostat 33, a movable member 39 is displaced against a spring 41 depending on the expansion of wax 40 corresponding to the temperature of cooling water, so that a valve 43 selectively opens or closes the inlet ports 30, 31. When the temperature of cooling water is low, the movable member 39 is displaced upward by the spring 41 to connect the inlet port 31 to a suction side 46. When the temperature of cooling water is high, the wax 40 expands to connect the inlet port 30 to the suction side 46.
