Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a basic skeleton of an antibiotic substance, industrial and agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or intermediate of pharmaceuticals, etc., in high yield, by reacting a β-amino with a condensation agent in a binary phase system comprising an organic phase and a water phase, using a phase transfer catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A β-lactam of formula II (R1WR5 are organic residue which does not participate in the reaction) (e.g. 1-cyclohexyl-4-methyl-2-azetidinone, etc.) is prepared by reacing a β-amino acid of formulaI[e.g. 3-(cyclohexylamino)butanoic acid, etc.]in a binary phase system comprising an organic solvent phase and water phase using a condensation agent such as methanesulfonyl triazole, etc., a phase transfer catalyst such as tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate, and an alkaline substance such as lithium hydroxide. This process can be applied even to an optically active amino acid without causing isomerization.
