Abstract

PURPOSE:To automate focusing of a laser beam and to improve its accuracy in a laser working device by measuring the brightness of plasma generated on the surface of a material to be worked. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam 2 is converged by a condenser 4 and irradiated on the surface of a work 6 and generates plasma that has brightness proportionate to output density of the beam. When the brightness of plasma is measured by a photo-sensor 12 and a brightness measuring device 11 while moving a working head 5 along Z-axis by a working head driving mechanism 9, the brightness becomes a maximum when the distance between the lens and the work becomes equal to the focal length of the condenser 4. Detecting signals from the brightness measuring device 11 and a position reading device 10 of the working head 5 are inputted to a control device 13, and inputted to a working head driving mechanism 9 after operating the position of the working head 3 on the Z-axis. The position of the condenser 4 housed in the working head 5 is set automatically to make the distance between the lens and the work equal to the focal length of the condenser 4.
