PURPOSE:To achieve recording with increased tone gradient and resolution, by recording a signal representing one picture element of an input signal with a binary signal through the comparison with one small matrix in a matrix representing a large threshold value pattern. CONSTITUTION:A row 11 of an input signal is represented with a matrix A consiting of longitudinal component (k) and transversal component (l). A memory 13 stores a threshold value pattern representing the tone gradiedt of an image and is represented with a matrix M consisting of longitudinal component (p) and a transversal component (q). A signal 21 represented with a matrix B consisting of longitudinal component (i) and a transversal component (j) is outputted. A dot printer 23 receives the signal 21 and makes recording on a recording paper 25 numbered as ns for longitudinal direction and nm as transversal direction by using a head 27. The position of head 27 is detected at an operation device 15 to obtain (k), (l), (p) and (q) as shown in Figure and binary outputs Bi and (j). The head 27 makes recording according to binary outputs Bi and (j), allowing to reproduce image increased with the tone gradient and resolution.
