Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce externally applied energy to zero or to a considerable extent, by utilizing as a heat source the heat of polymerization generated during the polymerization reaction and the remaining heat coming from other unit processes in the production of the titled product by a refrigeration process.
CONSTITUTION: In a production process PS, comprising feeding, for example, a styrene monomer from a pipe 1 to a polymerization vessel 2, polymerizing therein 75% of the monomer, converting the remaining 25% styrene monomer into a heated vapor in a devolatilizer 5 under a high vacuum and then liquefying the vapor by cooling to about +2°C in a condenser 9; use is made of the heat of polymerization and the heat left in the residual PS solution left after removal of the unpolymerized monomer in the devolatilizer 5, as a cold heat source (at highest -4°C) used for cooling and liquefying the styrene monomer under a high vacuum in the condenser. In this way, it is possible to reduce the power consumption necessary to operate pumps 20 and 33 to a considerable extent.
