This converted binary signal is temporarily stored in a pattern memory 11 and the character 2 is recognized with a temporarily stored data at a CPU24. In storing the reading data to the memory 11, the continuity of spaces between the character pattern and the adjacent character pattern is sequentially traced with a career shift register 12, and AND gate group 13, an OR gate group 14, and a discrimination shift register 15, the state of separation of the read-in character pattern is discriminated with a separation discriminating ROM16, FFs 17 and 18, and AND gates 19, 20 and 21 to control the CPU24.
