PURPOSE:To always ensure the accurate control of the toner density with high sensitivity and with a compact and simple constitution, by detecting the toner density of the developer and then controlling the toner supply device in accordance with the toner density. CONSTITUTION:A developer 1 applied to a latent image on the surface of a photoreceptor 20, and the developer which is not applied to the drum 20 is circulated again through the sensor part 30 of a toner density detector/controller. The both-end voltage VC of a capacitor C35 of the part 30 is usually set equal to the power supply voltage VP and then lowered when the signal is delivered from a sampling pulse producer 43 of a detecting circuit 40 to carry out the detection of the toner density. The reduction rate of the voltage VC differs in accordance with the resistance value of the developer 1 that flows on the surfaces of detecting electrodes 33 and 34 of the part 30. The change of the discharging time of the capacitor C35 is given to a comparator 47 via a comparator 45, a gate 46 and a time counter 44. Then a motor 50 is driven when the change of the discharging time of the C35 is shorter than the set time. Thus the toner is supplied to the developer 1.
