PURPOSE:To hold the steady switching state having no change of light quantity, by applying an AC voltage or rectangular voltage of different in phase to the periodical electrodes provided at the crossing part of optical waveguides. CONSTITUTION:The optical waveguides 11 and 12 crossing each other are provided on a ferrodielectric or semiconductor substrate, and the waveguide 12 is divided into two optical guidewaves 13 and 14. The periodical electrodes 15 and 16 are set at the crossing parts among the waveguides 11, 13 and 14 respectively. then the rectangular voltage of opposite phases is applied to the electrodes 15 and 16 from the the driving circuits 17 and 18. As a result, the voltage of the electrodes 17 and 18 are periodically set at zero to eliminate a DC field drift phenomenon. The voltage of the electrodes 17 and 18 are not set at zero at one time to decrease the fluctuation of light volume for the output beam 25. In such way, the steady switching state is held with no change of light quantity.
