Abstract
PURPOSE:To economically conduct electrolytic operation at low voltage and high current density by setting flat lattice electrodes formed with expanded metals opposite to each other at specified places when an aqueous alkali chloride soln. is electrolyzed in a diaphragm system electrolytic cell. CONSTITUTION:When an aqueous NaCl soln. or the like is electrolyzed in a diaphragm system electrolytic cell provided with a cation exchange membrane, a cathode made of expanded Fe, Ni or stainless steel and an anode made of expanded Ti are used. Each of the electrodes has one side or both sides flattened by rolling, an apparent thickness corresponding to <=60% of the original apparent thickness of the expanded metal, and 20-50% opening rate. The electrodes 1, 2 are set opposite to each other so that the openings of one electrode 1 are faced to the intersections A of the other electrode 2, and the distance between the diaphragm and each of the electrodes is made <=2mm.. Thus, economical electrolytic operation at low voltage and high current density is enabled.
