Abstract

PURPOSE:In ion exchange membrane electrolysis of aqueous alkaline metal salt solution, gas phase pressure in cathode chamber is maintained at a specified level higher than atomospheric pressure, thereby to reduce voltage between electrodes. CONSTITUTION:In ion exchange membrane electrolysis of KC1 or NaCl aqueous solution, gas phase pressure in cathode chamber is maintained at a level of 200mm H2O higher, preferably 400mm H2O higher and more preferably 800mm H2O higher than atomospheric pressure. When cathode chamber pressure is about 400mm H2O, rapid voltage decrease between electrodes occurs at 200mm H2O differential pressure between cathode chamber and anode chamber; when cathode chamber pressure is higher than 800mm H2O, further voltage decrease occurs between electrodes at differential pressure of more than 400mm H2O.
