Abstract
PURPOSE: To make possible electrolysis at a low voltage constantly for a long time, by inserting reinforcing material consisting of metallic wire, net, or porous plate into an ion exchange membrane, and by conducting the electrolysis at the same voltage of the reinforcing material as that of cathode.
CONSTITUTION: Metallic wire of wire diameter 5W50% of the thickness of fluorine- contg. cation exchange membrane having carboxylic group, a metallic net of 10W30 mesh, and a metallic porous plate having 20W1,000μ average pore diameter, 30W 90% in porosity are inserted into the cation exchange membrane as the reinforcing material of the membrane. For the metal is used Ni, stainless steel, tungsten, platinum, or an alloy of iron and molybdenum etc. A portion of these metallic wire, net, porous plate are brought into contact with cathode so as to make the metal equal in potential with the cathode. Electrolysis of alkali chloride is carried out by using the cation exchange membrane to manufacture caustic alkali. Because increase in voltage due to residence of foams caused by the expansion and contraction of the membrane is prevented, the electrolysis is continued for a long time at a high current efficiency.
