Abstract

PURPOSE: To reinforce the exchange membrane and suppress its elongation and contraction substantially perfectly by inserting the wires, nets or porous plates made of metals into the ion exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: E.g., wires, nets or porous plates made of metals are press-fitted into the ion exchange membrane, particularly, the cationic exchange membrane containing fluorine to be used for the electrolysis of an aqueous alkali chloride solution and having been once filmed, or these are inserted at the filming. The metals constituting the wires, etc. are Ni, various stainless steels, iron, W, Ag, Pt and other alloys and the nets are of 10W300 meshes. The ion exchange membrane reinforced in this way is improved in the dimensional stability and will not cause abrasion loss and failure by swelling or partial creasing by the effect of a high- temperature aqueous alkali chloride solution, e.g., by contacting with electrodes. Or such inconveniences as increased electrical resistance owing to stagnation of the gas evolved such as chlorine in the creased portions do not occur either.
