Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a photo-sensitive material exhibiting high contrast ratio in the visible light region, having low fading tendency, capable of keeping the color for a long period, and suitable as a repeatedly usable recording or displaying medium, by using a rate earth metal orthoniobate of a specific formula.
CONSTITUTION: The objective material is composed of a rare earth metal orthoniobate of formula (A is one or more rare earth elements selected from Y, Eu, Gd, Dy, Tm, and Yb; at least one of x, y and z is 0.0001W0.01 and the others are 0, or x is 0.0001W0.01, one of y and z is 0.0001W0.01 and the other is 0). The rare earth metal orthoniobate can be prepared by compounding fine powder of rare earth metal orthoniobate of formula ANbO4, e.g. YNbO4, etc. with fine powder of PrNbO4, TbNbO4, etc. in an amount to give the x, y and z within the ranges given in the formula, and calcining the mixture at 1,250W1,400°C.
