Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a chain polymer of propiolic acid which is an acetylene having a polar group in high yield, by using molybdenum pentachloride as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A propiolic acid, expressed by the formula (X is H, alkyl group, aryl group, carboxyl group, etc.) is added to a solvent, e.g. ether or ester, to give a concentration of preferably 0.1W5mol/l, and 0.1W10mol%, based on the propiolic acid, molybdenum pentachloride as a catalyst is added to polymerize the propiolic acid in a dried nitrogen atmosphere at 0W100°C and give the aimed polymer. In case a β-substituted propiolic acid is polymerized, a mixture of the molybdenum pentachloride with preferably about an equimolar amount of a reducing agent, e.g. tetraphenyltin, is allowed to stand for 10W30min, matured and used.
USE: Applicable to semiconductors, surfactants, flocculants, metallic complexes, catalytic carriers, etc.
