Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a small-diameter pencil-like product having high strength, by heating and melting high-softening point pitch and allowing it to flow down in the form of a small-diameter rod, to pass through a high-boiling point liquid and then to be cooled with water.
CONSTITUTION: High softening-point pitch is introduced into an inner vessel 3 through a feeding opening 11 to be heated and molten. The molten pitch P flows down through an outlet nozzle 7 having an opening degree controlled in the form of a small-diameter rod to pass through a pure liquid or a mixed liquid L being cooled by it. The liquid L has a specific gravity of 1.0 or less, a boiling point of 150W450°C and a surface tension of 20W60 dyne/cm (20°C). Subsequently, the pitch is cooled with water W to be granulated into small-diameter pencil-like matter. When the molten pitch flows down into the pure liquid or mixed liquid, the cooling liquid L in a surface that is in contact with the pitch is heated. As a result, a temperature difference between the pitch and the liquid L becomes small and the pitch is cooled gradually. Thus, the formation of residual stress is little, and the granulated matter having high strength can be obtained.
