PURPOSE:To detect the residual quantity and the running quantity of a tape in real time instantaneously at a reverse reproducing time, by substituting signals of normal and reverse rotation period data of a tape reel with each other in accordance with normal and reverse reproducing states to operate the quantity of the tape. CONSTITUTION:Data signals corresponding to rotation periods T1 and T2 of tape reels 1 and 2 and a constant signal from a constant generator 12 are used to perform the operation processing along a prescribed arithmetic expression in an operating circuit 10, and the result is displayed on a tape quantity display equipment 13. At a reproducing time when a tape 3 is carried in the normal direction in a constant speed, switches 8 and 9 are controlled by a command signal from a running quantity/residual quantity display signal generating circuit 11 and a reproducing direction command, and periods T1 and T2 are selected as Ts and Tt and are inputted to the circuit 10 (Ts and Tt are rotation periods of supply and take-up reels respectively), thus obtaining a tape running quantity L2 and a tape residual quantity L1. At a reverse reproducing time, switches 8 and 9 are controlled, and periods T2 and T1 are selected as Ts and Tt respectively, and the operation is performed.
