Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a compact internal combustion engine by disposing an automatic tension adjusting device in a space formed between a crankshaft and cam driving shaft inside a transmission band. CONSTITUTION:Inside an endless transmission chain 15, between a crankshaft 1 and a pair of cam driving shafts 5, 6 is provided an automatic tension adjusting mechanism A which urges elastically a tensioner body 16 toward the transmission chain 15 to give a predetermined tension to said chain 15. As a result, since said mechanism A is received in a dead space formed inside the endless transmission chain 15, any projections on the outer periphery of an engine body can be dispensed with and a compact engine can be provided.
