Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily produce a flat plate optical waveguide having the excellent characteristics, by coating a high molecular sheet having a thickness equal to or larger than the core diameter of an input optical fiber and a refractive index equal to or larger than that of the core of the optical fiber with a high molecular sheet of a low refractive index. CONSTITUTION:This flat plate optical waveguide is obtained by coating a core part 1 comprising a high molecular sheet having a thickness larger than the core diameter of an incident optical fiber 3 and a refractive index equal to or larger than the maximum refractive index of the core of the fiber 3 with a cladding 2 made of a high molecular material having a refractive index lower than that of the core part 1. For the examples of a combination of the core 1 and the cladding 2, the methyl methacrylate polymer or its copolymer is used for the core; and the vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer or an unsaturated polymeric compound of >=50wt% composition of fluorine of vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluoroethylene, etc. is used for the cladding respectively.
