PURPOSE:To improve flatness of a strip at the top of rolling and to reduce the time required for shape stabilization, by setting an optimum press. of variable crown rolls at the starting of rolling from various kinds of data, stored in normal rolling, and qualities of material to be rolled and rolling conditions. CONSTITUTION:Strip 4 is rolled by a four-high-mill, equipped with backup rolls 2 and work rolls 3 having variable crowns (expressed as VC hereunder) respectively. Then VC press., sheet thickness, reduction rate, and an amount of crown in normal rolling are stored in a device 6 by a shape detector 5. These data are stored at every rolling of all coils as the data in the past time in good state of flatness. Then, before the starting of rolling at this time, an initial VC press in running is computed from the material quality and the rolling scheduling, referzing to the above-mentioned past data, by a computer 7 in order to set the computed value as an optimum VC pressure. Thus an inferior part in flatness of strip is reduced and a rolling yield is improved.
