Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve intermixing of fuel and air by making the distribution pattern of atomized fuel from a fuel injection nozzle into a flattened rectangular shape and by making the direction of the transverse axis of the distribution pattern of atomized fuel to coincide with the direction of a tangential line relative to a swirl of suction air within a combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A fuel injection nozzle 10 includes a nozzle body 11 having a jet 11a at an end thereof, and a nozzle needle 12 inserted through the nozzle body 11 for reciprocal motion to open and close the jet 11a. The jet 11a is formed into a hole of a flattened rectangular shape by, for example, electrospark machining. The injection nozzle 10 is mounted at an obliquely upper position relative to a combustion chamber 2 such that the direction of the transverse axis of a distribution pattern of atomized fuel substantially coincides with the direction of a tangential line relative to a swirl A of suction air in the combustion chamber 2. Atomized fuel injected from the jet 11a is thus caused to present a flattened rectangular shape and is uniformly diffused and properly intermixed by the swirl A of suction air within the combustion chamber 2.
