Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect liquid levels distinctly by forming the end face of an optical fiber to a circular cone shape at such an angle at which the direction of reflection varies according to whether said fiber is in water or in air. CONSTITUTION:A core 1 is enveloped with a clad layer 2, and the leading end of a fiber is provided with a reflection film 3, and is formed to a circular cone shape of a vertex theta0. If the angle that the normal of the circular cone shaped face and the axial line of the fiber assume is defined as thetai, the incident angle of the critical angle at which the light propagating in the core 1 totally reflects while the leading end is in air is defined as thetaC0, and the critical angle at which the light is transmitted while the leading end is in water as thetaC1, the light reflects totally in air and transmits in water at thetaC0<thetai<thetaC1. Desired conditions are obtained by setting the angle of the vertex theta0 at the angle satisfying thetaC0< 90 deg.-2theta0<thetaC1 from the relation angle thetai=90 deg.-2theta0. It is possible to know whether a liquid level sensor 5 is in the liquid level to be detected or not by using such sensor 5 and using a light emitting element 6, a photodetector 7 and a directional coupler 8.
