Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable correct detection of the presence of pressure even in a remote place by a method wherein a optical fiber is arranged in opposition to a mirror surface in a plunger which is displaced in correspondence to the change in pressure of a medium such as liquid and thereby a reflected light from the mirror surface is detected.
CONSTITUTION: The plunger 17 is arranged in a cylinder 16 and the mirror surface 18 of complete reflection is attached to one end of the plunger 17. One end of the optical fiber 1 connected to a detecting part is led into the cylinder 16 and is opposed to the mirror surface 18. A gap between the cylinder 16 and the plunger 18 is kept airtight, while the plunger 18 is biased to one side in the cylinder 16 by a method of enclosure of the enclosed gas 20 and the like. When a detecting device constituted by the cylinder 16 is placed in the ambience of gas or the like, the plunger 17 is displaced by the pressure of the gas which permeates from an introducing orifice 19, one end of the optical fiber 1 is made to contact with the mirror surface 18, the light reflected by the surface 18 reaches a photoreceiving element 5 through the intermediary of a directional coupler 2, and thereby the presence of the pressure is detected. In a steady state, the light reflected from the mirror surface 18 is not detected.
