Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer having improved light transmittance, and suitable for light transmitting fibers, by polymerizing a methyl methacrylate monomer, containing substantially no oxygen, and having improved transparency in an inert gas at a high temperature and pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A methyl methacrylate monomer (consisting of the methyl methacrylate essentially) is evaporated by heating in an inert gas in a container 1, and the resultant gas is passed through a rectifying column 4 and filtered through a porous membrane 5, e.g. porous hollow fibers made from polypropylene, and purified to give a monomer, containing substantially no oxygen, and having a Rayleigh ratio R90≤5/6 that of benzene which is a standard sample measured by a light-scattering photometer. An initator, e.g. di-tert-butyl peroxide, in an amount ≤0.05pt. and a chain transfer agent, e.g. n-dodecyl mercaptan, in an amount ≤0.2pt. are added to the monomer, and the polymerization is carried out in an inert gas at a high temperature of 160W250°C and a high pressure of 10W200atm.
