Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate the molten steel in a converter from molten slag and to tap the steel in high yields by inserting a tubular plug body having a horizontal melt flow port in an end part into an iron notch provided on the side wall part of a converter, and moving the plug body in the iron notch during tapping of molten steel.
CONSTITUTION: A tubular plug body 3 made of refractories closed in an inside end part 3A and provided with a melt flow port 4 on the side is inserted into an iron notch 2 provided in the side wall part of a converter 1, and the plug body 3 is made slidable in the notch 2 by driving of a lever device mounted to a rotary post 6. In the case of tilting the converter 1, and tapping molten steel 16 through the notch 2, the body 3 is advanced into the notch 2 with the device 10, and the port 4 is opened to the inside of the steel 16, whereby the molten steel is tapped. When molten slag 17 approaches to the port 4 on progression of the tapping, the lever device 10 is driven to draw out the body 3 gradually and to close the port 4 with the side wall of the notch 2, thereby preventing the discharge of the molten metal 17. Thus, the molten steel 16 and the molten slag 17 are taken out in high yields without mixing.
