Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled glass, by heating a mixed gel of a silicon alcoholate, a water-soluble Sr salt of mineral acid and water.
CONSTITUTION: A silicon alcoholate Si(OR)4(R is aliphatic group) is mixed with a water-soluble Sr salt of mineral acid such as strontium nitrate, etc. in the pressure of water, to give gel. In the reaction, water dissolves the Sr salt of mineral acid and comes into contact with Si(OR)4 closely, and hydrolyzes Si(OR)4. Therefore, the reaction is carried out in the pressure of so sufficient water to effect the hydrolysis. The gel is then heated at such a temperature as to be condensed, namely to form network structure as glass, consisting of SrO and SiO2. Since the prepared glass has generally micro pores, it is heated for a given time, to give glass with no pore. Since this glass is made without using a crucible, it is high-purity and used widely in fields requiring high-insulating properties or irradiation coloring resistance.
