Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield under relatively low pressure, by hydrogenating an oxalic acid diester in the presence of a copper-chromium-manganese catalyst in either liquid or vapor phase.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol is prepared by the vapor-phase or liquid-phase hydrogenation of an oxalic acid diester using a Cu-Cr-Mn catalyst. The weight ratios of the components of the Cu-Cr-Mn catalyst is pref. in the range of 20W80 of Cu as CuO, 20W80 of Cr as Cr2O3 and 1W15 of Mn as MnO2. When the reaction is carried out in vapor phase, it is preferable to use an oxalic acid diester composed of the residue of a 1W8C lower alcohol (e.g. dimethyl oxalate) as the raw material. In the case of liquid-phase reaction, an oxalic acid diester composed of an alcohol residue having relatively large carbon number (e.g. ≥4C) is used as the raw material.
