Abstract
PURPOSE: To methylate the o-position of a phenolic compound selectively, in improved catalytic activity, durable activity and selectivity, by using a catalyst containing iron oxide, indium oxide and chromium oxide and silica in combination.
CONSTITUTION: A compound having one hydrogen at least the o-position, e.g. phenol or cresiol, is catalytically reacted in the vapor phase with methanol to prepare an orthomethylated phenolic compound. In the process, a catalyst containing iron oxide, indium oxide, chromium oxide and silica at an atomic ratio of the respective components Fe:In:Cr:Si=10:(1W30):(0.3W10):(0.1W5) is used, and the catalytic reaction is carried out at 300W400°C at an LHSV of 0.1W5. An alkali metallic compound contained in the catalytic system further improves the durable activity of the catalyst.
