Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain urethane in high yield with a high reaction rate, by reacting an aromatic nitro compound with an alcohol or phenol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising palladium and molybdenum.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic nitro compound, e.g. 2,4-dinitrotoluene, is reacted with a hydroxyl group-containing organic compound, e.g. ethanol, and carbon monoxide in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising palladium and molybdenum, and a cocatalyst consisting of (a) a tertiary amine, (b) iron or vanadium compound, and (c) chloride ions, to give urethane. The three-or four-component catalyst comprising additionally selenium and/or tellurium permits a reduction in loss by the dissolution in the reaction system.
