Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a simple, small-sized, light-weight, inexpensive, high-attenuation precision, and stable optical attenuator, by interposing a medium of a low refractive index in the gap between planes of a pair of semicylindrical refractive index distributed lenses which face to each other through the gap and changing the gap to use end faces of lenses as input and output terminals. CONSTITUTION:A medium of a low refractive index such as silicone oil is interposed in a gap 2 between a pair of semicylindrical refractive index distributed lenses 1a and 3a. A lens 1 is fixed to a box body 9 through a supporting member 8, and the lens 3a is connected to a feed machanism 10 for gap adjustment through a supporting member 11. Optical fibers 4-6 are fixed to the incident end face and the emission end face of the lens and the emission end face of the lens 3a by an adhesive 7. An incident light Pi from the optical fiber 4 is attenuated, and an attenuated reflection light Pr and an attenuated transmission light are taken out from optical fibers 5 and 6. Thus, an optical attenuator is obtained which is simple, small-sized, light-weight, inexpensive, and high-attenuation precision and is operated stably.
