1282511 Coupling of optical fibres NIPPON SELFOC CO Ltd 3 Sept 1969 [5 Sept 1968] 43570/69 Heading G2J Converging optical fibre light guides 1, 2 having a refractive index variation in a transverse cross section in accordance with the equation n = n 0 (1-2/b<SP>2</SP> . r<SP>2</SP>), where n o is the value at the axis and n the value at a distance r from the axis and where b is a constant, may be optically coupled as shown to provide a mode matched transmission path for laser beams by using a small lens-like similar guide portion 3 having carefully chosen dimensions and spacing relative to the main guides 1, 2. Design details are given and included in the claims.
