Abstract

Fibrous converging light guide elements 11, 12, 13, having transverse refractive index variations according to the formula n = n o (1 - ar ) where n o and n are the values at the axis and at a distance r from the axis and where "a" is a positive constant, may be optically coupled to a similar element 14 by stepwise movement of a frame 17 in which is mounted a lens and one end of the fibre 14. The lens may be omitted.
