Abstract

1429843 Light guides PLESSEY CO Ltd 23 May 1974 [2 June 1973] 26420/73 Heading G2J A coupler for light guides 5, 6 which may be single fibres or bundles of fibres, or for a light guide and a terminal member e.g. an emitter or detector, comprises two members 1, 2 adapted to fit together so that light guides secured respectively to one of the members are axially aligned, and a lens 12a, 12b interposed between the end-faces 5a, 6a of the guides so as to focus on each face an image of the other. The lens may be a single convex element, Fig. 1 (not shown) or two such elements, one supported in each member, Fig. 2, (not shown), the element(s) being out of contact with the end-faces 5a, 6a. In Fig. 3, the lens bodies 12a, 12b each have a convex ellipsoidal face 13a, 13b, having an eccentricity 1/n where n is the refractive index of the body material.
