Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain optical phosphate glass with a large Abbe's number and high chemical durability by regulating phosphate glass contg. Al2O3 in large quantities to a specified composition within the vitrifying range.
CONSTITUTION: This optical phosphate glass with >70 Abbe's number consists of, by wt., 70W75% P2O5, 11W15% Al2O3, 5W18% K2O, 0W10% B2O3, 0W3% Li2O, 0W8% Na2O, 0W8% Cs2O (B2O3+Li2O+Na2O+K2O+Cs2O=10W18%) and 0W5% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO. Less than the lower limit of P2O5 deteriorates the durability and increases the devitrification tendency. More than the upper limit of P2O5 increases said tendency and gives high viscosity during melting, so it is difficult to obtain homogeneous glass. Al2O3 improves the durability, yet less than the lower limit of Al2O3 produces an insufficient effect, and more than the upper limit of Al2O3 increases the devitrification tendency. B2O3 stabilizes the glass and reduces the viscosity during melting. K2O stabilizes the glass and has the widest vitrifying range among alkalis. Li2O, Na2O and Cs2O stabilize the glass and reduce the viscosity during melting.
