Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cathode for electrolysis of low hydrogen overvoltage and superior durability and corrosion resistance by applying nickel plating on the surfaces of iron or the like by using a plating bath added with a proper amt. of an S compound such as thiourea and ammonium ions and further subjecting the same to a heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Iron or an alloy consisting essentially of iron is used as a base material, and it is applied with nickel plating with a plating bath contg. a soluble nickel salt such as nickel sulfate of 0.1W2.0mol concn., thiourea of 0.01W 1.5mol concns. as an S amt. and/or an S compound such as oxo acid salt of ≤5 oxidation number of s, ammonium ions of ≥0.5 times the molar concn. of the S concn. of said S compound, etc. Thence, this is subjected to a heat treatment in a 50W500°C temp. range in a non-oxidative atmosphere of inert gas, reducing gas, vacuum, etc. Thereby, the adhesivness between the plating film and the base material is improved, and the cathode for electrolysis which is strong to a bending test, is highly durable and corrosion resistant and exhibits extremely low hydroven overvoltage is obtained.
