Abstract
PURPOSE: Dephosphorized slag is treated with water and carbon dioxide, the solid is separated from the liquid, the pH of the resultant liquid is adjusted to a specific value, then an organic substance is added thereto to recover vanadium effectively.
CONSTITUTION: Water and carbon dioxide are added to dephosphorized slag, which is formed, when a slagging agent mainly consisting of an alkali metal carbonate such as sodium carbonate is added to molten iron or molten steel, and the solid is the mixture is separated from the liquid to remove SiO2, Fe and other substances. The pH of the extract containing eluted alkali metal compounds of vanadium is adjusted to 8.0W11.0 with, e.g., aqueous ammonia and an organic substance such as an amine or phosphate salt is added by about 2W10 volumes per 10 volumes of the extract to divide the mixture into the organic layer and the inorganic layer. The organic layer containing vanadium is adjusted in pH to higher 12 or lower than 2 to collect vanadium compounds. The compounds are further reduced to produce pure vanadium.
