Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the running state to be controlled into a high load region where the economy of fuel cost can be expected to be improved, by suitably thinning out cyclic combustion operations of cylinders of multicylinder internal combustion engine so that the number of operating cylinders can be varied to increase relatively the load on the engine.
CONSTITUTION: From the required output and the rotational frequency of the engine detected by a rotation detector 30, the running state of the multicylinder engine is judged, the cylinders are operated at the high load region, and the number of operating cylinders necessary for the judged running state is detected. By thinning suitably out the cyclic combustion operation of the cylinders, the number of operating cylinders is varied by a fuel control unit 20 so that the number of cylinders to be operated is made equal to the prescribed number of operating cylinders. Thus, the running state can be controlled into a high load region where the economy of fuel cost can be expected, so that continuous torque control with a high degree of freedom become possible.
