Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a highly effective suspending agent for silica by using as an effective component one or more quarternary ammonium compounds wherein each of the four substituents bonded to the nitrogen atom contains not more than 8 carbon atoms.
CONSTITUTION: The suspending agent for silica is prepared by using one ore more quaternary ammonium compounds represented by formulaI(wherein each of R1WR4 is an up to 8C organic group, and X is a hydroxyl group or a halogen atom). Examples of the compound of formulaIinclude chloride, bromide and iodide of tetramethylammonium. In order to further enhance the effect of the compound of formulaI, a water-soluble amine such as lower alkyl amines, alkanolamines and ethylenediamine may be added as an adjuvant.
