Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the activity of a catalyst and to improve the selectivity of the reaction in the preparation of acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethanol by the reaction of CO with H2 in the presence of Rh catalyst, by using a cocatalyst composed of (Ag, Ni, Co and/or B) and (Zr, Mg and/or Th).
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethanol are prepared reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a rhodium catalyst using a cocatalyst composed of silver, nickel, cobalt and/or boron in combination with zirconium, magnesium and/or thorium. Compounds of rhodium and the cocatlyst components (e.g. halide, oxyhalide, etc.) are dissolved in water or an organic solvent such as n-hexane, a porous inorganic carrier (e.g. silica, activated alumina, ec.) is added to the solution, and the catalyst components are supported on the carrier by immersion, ion exchange, etc., and reduced or heat-treated to obtain the catalyst.
