Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst of considerably improved selectivity without degrading activity by impregnating a silver compound and sodium carbonate and/or sodium bicarbonate on a porous refractory carrier.
CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. dissolved with Na2CO3 and/or NaHCO3 is impregnated in a porous refractory carrier having 0.05W10m2/g surface areas and at least 20% apparent porosities, more preferably a carrier consisting essentially of α-alumina and the carrier is dried by heating in the presence of nitrogen of air. The amts. of addition of NaCO2 and NaHCO3 are about 200ppmW1.25wt% based on the weight of the catalyst, and about 0.002W0.29 (molar ratio) based on the silver. Silver is deposited by allowing the same to exist in the form of discontinuous roughly semispherical fine particles wherein most of the silver particles have ≤10,000Å equiv. diameters. The amts. of the silver carried on the catalyst are set at about 3W25wt%, more preferably, 3W20wt%.
