Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst of considerably improved activity by incorporating-specific atomic ratios of Na and Cl in addn. to silver in the catalyst at the time of producing ethylene oxide by oxidizing ethylene with molecular oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: The catalyst is incorporated with at least Na as a cationic component and Cl as an anionic component, in addition to silver. As an Na source, for example, Na2CO3 is preferable, and is contained at about ≤1.25wt% based on the weight of the catalyst and preferably at about ≤0.58 atomic ratio to silver. As a Cl source, for example, NaCl is preferable and the atomic ratio of Cl/Na is kept at ≤1. The amt. of the silver deposited on the catalyst is set at about 1W25wt%. The Na source and the Cl source are dissolved in an aq. solvent, and the soln. is impregnated with a porous refractory carrier having 0.05W102m/g surface area, and at least 20% apparant porosities, more preferably, a carrier consisting essentially of α-alumina, and the carrier is dried by heating, whereby the desired catalyst is obtained.
