Abstract
PURPOSE:A specific crystalline transition metal organosilicate is used as a catalyst to produce the titled mixture from methanol with no formation of aromatic hydrocarbons of 10 or more carbon atoms such as durene. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is brought into contact with a dehydrogenation catalyst at 250-500 deg.C under less than 100 atm pressure to form dimethyl ether first. Then, a mixture of the dimethyl ether, water and unreacted methanol is subjected to the catalytic reaction at 300-600 deg.C under lower than 100 atm pressure in the presence of a catalyst of a crystalline transition metal organosilicate of the formula (R is mono-or divalent cation; n is valency of R; M is trivalent transition metal cation; a+b=1, a>0, b>=0 and y>=12) (where the formula is expressed as an oxide in moles) containing an organic compound of alcohol, organic amine or ether to produce the objective aromatic hydrocarbon mixture. EFFECT:The formation of carbon is prohibited and the catalyst life is prolonged.
