Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent buckling of billets in the course of scalping and to improve qualities of extrusion products, by performing scalping treatment on hot billets at a relatively low temperature before they are extruded.
CONSTITUTION: Billets are put into the primary heating equipment 7 and they are heated to a temperature which is suitable to the scalping treatment and which is lower than the extrusion temperature. Then, the hot billet is fed into a scalper 9 with carrying devices 11 and 12, and a scalping treatment is performed on the shell along the axial direction of the billet with a die 9A by advancing a pressure stem 9B. Since the treatment temperature is low, the billet B will not buckle into a barrel-shape B2. After the scalping treatment, the billet is put into the secondary heating device 8 and it is uniformly heated again for the total length, and then, the billet is sent to an extruding press 1 for extrusion. In this way, a uniform temperature distribution is achieved throughout the billet, and extrusion products having an excellent quality can be obtained.
